Is This the Year You Install a Generator in Your Home?
devine solar solutions: Will this be the season you take control of your power and get a generator?
When I leave for my morning walk these days, I find myself smelling the air and scanning the sky for smoke. It’s fire season again. Those of us who live in northern California have learned to dread late summer and fall for a very good reason—there’s just too much heartache and loss.

It’s not unusual to be without power for a week or more

It’s also the time when we lose power—sometimes for as much as a week or more. Without access to wifi, business as we know it grinds to a standstill. How do we calculate the cost of lost productivity and inventory? The inconvenience, frustration and expenses mount. No air conditioning, no refrigeration. The garage doors won’t open and security systems fail. The list goes on.

Generator: The basics

A generator converts mechanical energy obtained from an external source into electrical energy as the output. The size of the engine is directly proportional to the amount of power the generator can supply. It’s also directly related to the cost.

A note: This is not generally a DIY project, as installation includes electrical wiring, plumbing and natural gas components.

Generac generators: Powered by natural gas

At Devine Solar Systems, we sell primarily Generac generators. They’re high quality, have an excellent reputation and include a warranty. Within seconds of an outage, a Generac generator automatically supplies power directly to a home’s electrical circuit-breaker box. After utility power returns, the generator shuts itself off and waits for the next outage. The Generac generator starts and stops automatically and never needs refueling.

Generators can run for as long as there is a fuel supply to the generator—generally 24 hours, when they will require fuel, an oil check, and other maintenance.

The economics of a generator at your home

The average installation cost for a residential generator is an estimated $10,000-$13,000. Individual factors will influence the final cost.
